The annual Google Summer of Code winning organizations have been announced for 2021. The Summer of Code, or GSoC, is basically a process where Google sponsors post-secondary students to work on open source projects. Today they announced the various different open source projects that have been accepted for the GSoC. The application process for students wishing to participate will begin the end of March.
Several companies related to game development (or development in general) include:
- The Godot Game Engine
- Blender
- Synfig
- Audacity
- Python
- Dart
- Swift
- ScummVM
- Inkscape
There are several dozen participating companies so be sure to check the list of projects to see if there is something you are interested in. In the 2019 Summer of Code for the Godot game engine we got improvements such as Visual Scripting improvements, a GDScript language server and a re-written lightmapper. The same year we saw several improvements to Blender as a result too from the UI, to EEVEE to improved VR support.
